Discover the method used to play solo jazz piano

for adult jazz learners who struggle to play jazz

You’ve put in the work.
So why doesn’t it sound like jazz?

How do I get there? How do I actually learn jazz?

But nothing seems to answer that question for you

You see, the problem isn’t necessarily that you haven’t studied enough jazz theory, or that you haven’t practiced enough exercises.

It’s that there’s a crucial difference between learning ABOUT jazz…

…and learning how to actually PLAY it.

So how do you go from learning about jazz to actually playing it?

“Take just one concept, and stick to it.”

That’s what my jazz teacher told me in our first few lessons. It changed how I approached learning jazz, and it changed the way I teach my students now.

Pretty simple, right?

But I didn’t always know that. When I first started learning jazz, I spent about 2 years going through the exact same things you’re going through now.

Here’s what it looked like for me.

Learning ABOUT jazz

  • A huge rush of motivation: I’d watch every tutorial I could find
  • I’d learn a bunch of new concepts, and suddenly I had a lot to practice and no idea where to start
  • After a couple of weeks, jazz felt too complex and overwhelming, and I’d give up
  • A month or two later, I’d come back and repeat the same cycle
  • I ended up with a pile of random jazz concepts and techniques, but I still couldn’t play real jazz

Learning how to PLAY jazz

  • I picked one essential jazz piano technique and stopped jumping from one resource to another
  • I knew exactly what to practice, and I had only one thing to focus on
  • I became more and more proficient at it
  • For the first time, I had something to show for all my hours at the piano
  • I started using it naturally, without having to think about it and my playing started to sound like actual jazz

If you’re wondering who I am…

Charlie Tran

I’m Charlie Tran, a jazz pianist and teacher. I’ve helped over 100 adult pianists learn jazz through my methods, and over 200 more through my Academy.

And here’s what’s interesting about this approach: the deeper you understand one single technique, the more you understand jazz as a whole.

So every new concept builds on what you already know, which makes the next one easier to learn.

It’s like a snowball effect.

But it all starts with choosing the right concept to focus on first.

So, which one should you start with?

If you mostly want to play jazz piano for yourself, I’d start with the technique that’s actually meant for playing solo…

Spread Voicings

It turns one piano into a whole ensemble, so you play the melody, the bass, and rich harmonies in between, all at once. It’s quite easy to get into, and it was one of the first techniques my teacher showed me.

I’m sure you recognize that sound

There’s just one problem…

The voicing you play depends on the melody note, the bass note, the chord, the register of the keyboard, and the musical context.

Combine it all and you end up with thousands of different voicings. A lifetime wouldn’t be enough to learn them one by one.

So what you actually need to do is simply understand how those voicings work and how to choose which notes to play.

And to help my private students do this without feeling overwhelmed, I created my…

3 Level Spread Voicing System

It makes it simple and intuitive to learn these voicings, understand how they work, and use them to play jazz.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Take a lead sheet of your favorite jazz standard.

  2. Check the melody note and the chord type.

  3. Follow the intuitive instructions and guidelines to know exactly which notes to hit to play the spread voicing you need.

I’ll show you the whole process step by step on real jazz standards, and we’ll also look at some of the unique exceptions.

And because Spread voicings can be as simple as a few chord tones, or as advanced as all sorts of extensions and alterations, I divided the system into 3 levels.

Level 1: Functional Spread Voicings

This is how you start. You follow a set of rules and guidelines to understand how the technique works.

Level 2: Authentic Spread Voicings

That’s where you discover more “Jazz Authentic” voicings that use all kinds of colorful extensions, and more ways to arrange the notes within each chord.

Level 3: Pro Authentic Spread Voicings

You’ll learn those rich, sophisticated, harmonically advanced sounds that make you stop and think, “That sounds like jazz.” You learn advanced alterations and different ways to voice each chord, and this is where things really become your own.

I designed this system to give you a simple starting point, and to gradually take you from following guidelines to:

And through all 3 levels, you play the same 12 jazz standards, so you can literally hear your progress every time you move up a level.

Students who followed the exact same system to learn Spread Voicings:

I created this system for my private students, but not everyone has time to learn with a teacher.

So I made it accessible to everyone who wants to improve their jazz piano playing, at their own pace, inside…

Now, I’ll be honest with you

The Academy isn’t fully finished yet. There are dozens of courses I want to add, but there’s already plenty to start working through right away.

Every new course leads to what I call the four stock styles, the main ways jazz pianists divide things between their hands:

The more comfortable you get with all four, the more freedom you have when playing tunes, improvising, or accompanying other musicians.

You don’t have to wait. One payment gets you lifetime access, so you can start today while I keep adding courses.
